Obesity- A growing threat to Indian Society ( Understanding Nutrition Science)

As we see around the world these days, we see obesity as an issue everywhere. Thanks to the technological advancement which had made people being glued to electronic gadgets or busy somewhere in lost world and thereby gaining bulky weight or obese bodies. I really feel “Obesity” as a major challenge to our society and to the world. People, knowingly or unknowingly, get driven by the societal or personal pressure and ignore the very own “health”. Obesity is not only an issue in India but all over the world. However, I would like to focus on India at this point. Obesity is a complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity isn't just a cosmetic concern. It increases your risk of diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Being extremely obese means, you are especially likely to have health problems related to your weight. The good news is that even modest weight loss can improve or prevent the health problems associated with obesity. Dietary changes increased physical activity and behavior changes can help you lose weight.
The most important solution for this cause is to have proper understanding of right food and right time to eat and to have regular exercise in a disciplined manner. Currently, if we see the situation, it depicts the below picture where most of the bad habits are glued to people pertaining to eating junk foods, unhealthy life style and procrastinating the exercise and healthy habits to later point of life resulting to being highly prone to diseases.
Before:

After understanding the nutrition science and being mentally aware of healthy habits and active lifestyle could resolve many issues and it will not only provide social and physical health as well as mental and emotional well being too. This is shown as an after-state in below picture.
 After:

Design one-day lost experiment:
To achieve this, first I need to follow myself to be a role model in terms of leading an active and healthy life-style so that I can go to people with conviction and the result. So, here what I would do is to start with an apartment where I can design a workshop for the whole day to plan their day with different activities and nutrition and healthy diet.

·       Have a scale which can measure the whole-body composition like BMI, weight, Bone mass, muscle mass, visceral fat, protein, water and body fat. (Ref MI Scale measure these parameters and show the result on Mobile app)

·       Educate the people on nutrition science (e.g carbohydrates and fats are only two sources of energy for the body etc.) and food science (reference Book: “What your doctor doesn’t know about nutritional medicine may be killing you” by Ray. D. Strand)

·       Understand each one’s life style and then plan their respective day with inclusion of exercise time and meal intake time)

·       Guide the person with foods to avoid (like high carb diet) and what food to take and strictly only 3 meals to be completed within span of 9-10 hours and rest 14-15 hours should be in fasting mode.
·       Let them follow for a week and take the measurement of body parameters again.
·       Once the parameters improve, people would feel motivated and the body metabolism will start improving.
·       Send the person with motivational videos and real models who could gain result by following the diet and healthy life style.
·       Give idea on food style and keep them active by arranging activity, games and work outs as shown below.
·       Build a small community to share ideas, achievements and challenges.

Hypothesis:

People should realize they are obese and need correction in their eating pattern and sedentary life style.

Cost of experiment:

INR 2000 for Mi-scale, around 200 INR to show meals, work out arrangement with minimal cost and one mobile to show body parameters result.

Success measurement:

How many people convince with the workshop and their continuity and belief in following the healthy lifestyle along with quantitative measurement of body parameters.

  1. Indeed obesity is problem. Instead of organising a generic workshop may be it is better to hold specific workshop for obese people of certain segment like children. Also presence of some Bariatric physician will increase credibility.
